Sunday Snapshots DeLaSalle {Roaring Twenties}

Welcome to this week’s Sunday Snapshots: DeLaSalle {Roaring Twenties}

Grandpa Stan attended the college preparatory high school, DeLaSalle/De La Salle High, located on Nicolett Island, Minneapolis Minnesota.

Here, Stanley and his brother Tom were taught by the Christian Brothers (the Brothers of the Christian Schools) and received a well-rounded education. Stanley particularly excelled as an athlete on the tennis courts, which would later assist him in life as a tennis instructor at the Banff Springs Hotel.

Tuition at the time would have been around $75-80 a year, and with today’s inflation it would amount to about $1,100. Due to the economic crisis and freefall into the Great Depression, Stanley paid for both his own tuition and his brother Tom’s by working evenings at the Minneapolis club. During his bus rides to work from school, he would catch up on his homework.

The first photo illustrates what the school looked like in 1923 (via: Minnesota Historical Society) and the second photo is one I took in 2013. The last photo is a sophomore class photo of Stanley’s brother, Tom. He’s on the far right (first row), and is awesome – because he looks like Harry Potter.

A very special thank you goes out to the Staff at the Hennepin County Library. Without you, I would have never had these amazing yearbook photos of my grandpa!
